The Four Pillars of Destiny, explained

BaZi (八字, "eight characters") records your birth year, month, day, and hour as four pillars, each written with one Heavenly Stem and one Earthly Branch — eight characters in total. Together they describe the balance of five elemental energies at your birth moment.

The ten Day Masters

The stem of your day pillar is called the Day Master — the "you" of the chart. There are ten: Jia and Yi Wood, Bing and Ding Fire, Wu and Ji Earth, Geng and Xin Metal, Ren and Gui Water, each with a yang and yin flavor. Jia Wood is the towering tree; Yi Wood, the vine. Bing Fire is the sun; Ding Fire, the candle. Reading your Day Master is the first step of any BaZi reading.

The Five Elements

Wood feeds Fire; Fire makes Earth (ash); Earth bears Metal; Metal collects Water; Water feeds Wood. This generating cycle — and its controlling counterpart — is the grammar of a chart. Too much or too little of an element describes where life flows easily and where it takes effort.

What a reading can and cannot do

A good BaZi reading is a mirror, not a prophecy: it offers a vocabulary for self-reflection rooted in a millennium-old tradition. It cannot predict or control outcomes — and any reader who guarantees results is not practicing the tradition honestly.
